about

Elena Porqueddu is an architect, researcher and lecturer based in Milan. She gained her PhD in Architecture, Urban Design and Conservation of Housing and Landscape from the Polytechnic of Milan, with part of her research conducted at the University of Melbourne. Her work investigates the implications of systems thinking for spatial design practice, with a focus on theories of complex adaptive systems, emergence, self-organization, autopoiesis, resilience, embodiment, enaction and assemblage. In particular, she explores the potential of different spatial design disciplines – interior design, architecture, urban and landscape design – to enhance the adaptive capacity of place-specific socio-spatial configurations and to trigger processes of self-regeneration in cities. She has been a member of the Systemic Design Association since 2021. She is author of the book Designing the complex city. A systemic approach to spatial design (Routledge).

Her research has been published in international peer-reviewed journals (among others: Urban Design International, Springer; Journal of Urban Design, Taylor&Francis; Contexts – the systemic design journal) and presented at international seminars and conferences in Europe (among others: Systemic Design International Symposiums: TUDelft 2021 – University of Brighton 2022 – Turin Circolo del Design  2023 – Oslo school of Design 2024; New Metropolitan Perspectives, Reggio Calabria ’22; Open City Forum, Berlin, 2018;  New Science and Actions for Complex Cities, University of Florence, 2017), Russia (Moscow Design Week, 2014) Indonesia (Casa Jakarta, 2014), Colombia (Pontificia Universidad Javeriana / Universidad de Los Andes, Bogotà, 2014) and Santo Domingo (UNIBE, UNPHU, 2014-15).
